The Iowa Geological Survey will collaborate with the geological surveys of several neighboring states to assess the critical mineral potential of coal-bearing sedimentary bedrock formations as part of a U.S. Department of Energy grant program.
These projects will aim to find sources of minerals that are deemed critical to a carbon-neutral future by assessing deposits in the ground as well as waste generated from Iowa’s historic coal mining industry.
