Matthew Streeter and Thomas Stoeffler from the Iowa Geological Survey led a demonstration for Muscatine high school students at the Muscatine Agriculture Learning Center. IGS showcased the operation of a drill rig to install a monitoring well and extract soil cores to teach soil health principles. This initiative is part of a larger project in eastern Iowa aimed at expanding the Iowa Flood Center's hydro weather station network, championed by Representatives Ashley Hinson and Marianette Miller-Meeks. These hydrostations monitor rainfall, soil moisture, soil temperature, and groundwater levels, reporting data hourly to the publicly accessible Iowa Flood Information System (IFIS), aiding in flood prediction and drought monitoring, with the goal of having one station in every county. The Muscatine County station will be hosted at the Agriculture Learning Center.
