What are your responsibilities with the IGS?

I serve as a hydrogeologist with primary responsibilities including groundwater modeling of both state-wide and local scale aquifers.

What are your research/project interests?

I would like to assist water users and regulators in the identification and development of sustainable and protected groundwater sources.

How can your research in your areas of interest improve the quality of life in Iowa?

Properly managed aquifer resources and groundwater resource conservation will ensure a future for Iowans with sufficient drinking water quantity and quality.

What is your academic and professional background?

I worked 30 years as a hydrogeologist in the consulting engineering industry assisting clients with aquifer studies, source development and well siting and regulatory permitting of production wells.  I have a BS in geology; MS in geology (hydrogeology and applied geophysics emphasis); and an MS in urban and regional planning (environmental emphasis).

At about what age and why did you decide to become a geologist/scientist?

I became interested in hydrogeology as a career early in my academic studies, where I was able to participate in some shallow geophysical survey field work by both the Iowa Geological Survey and also within the Department of Geology at Iowa.

What field activity is your favorite?

I enjoy working with water utilities and well pump contractors to obtain aquifer and well performance data and also the follow-on analysis of hydrologic parameters and operation efficiency.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy trying to keep up with our two young-adult kids and reading.
