What are your responsibilities with the IGS?

I serve as the IGS’ geophysical program coordinator.  We use geophysical field methods to image and characterize the subsurface.  The results from these surveys help us address questions related to groundwater supply and quality, as well as a host of additional geologic concerns.

What are your research/project interests?

I am interested in electrical geophysical methods applied to local-scale hydrogeology and geology, the availability and sustainability of shallow groundwater resources, and ground and surface water interactions.

How can your research in your areas of interest improve the quality of life in Iowa?

Nearly 80% of Iowans rely on groundwater as a source of drinking water.  Assessing these valuable resources ensures our citizens remain healthy, our economy is vibrant, and the resource will be available for future generations.

What is your academic and professional background?

I received a BS in geoscience and a MS degree in interdisciplinary studies/hydrogeology from the University of Iowa.  I began my career with the IGS in 2008.  Since then, I have been involved in a wide array of research and projects related to geophysical investigations, groundwater studies, geologic sample and data management, and more.

At about what age and why did you decide to become a geologist/scientist?

A fascination with the outdoors beginning at a young age, coupled with an inquisitive mindset of the natural world eventually led me to a career in geology. While I had thoughts of a meteorological or environmental science career, a college campus visit in Colorado led me to pursue the field of geology.

What field activity is your favorite?

I enjoy any geophysical fieldwork.  Experiencing the field-side of a project gives great perspective on how we can use and properly analyze data.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy doing a host of outdoor activities with my wife, kids, and dogs. Some of our favorites include hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, and sailing.
